Silicon is a crystalline material very similar to germanium. It is mainly used in the MWIR band of 3~5um, and it has absorption in the LWIR band of 8~12um. Silicon has a slightly lower index of refraction than germanium, but it is still large enough to facilitate control of aberrations. In addition, the dispersion of silicon is relatively low.
