Silicon is a crystalline material very similar to germanium. It is mainly used in the MWIR band of 3~5um, and it has absorption in the LWIR band of 8~12um. Silicon has a slightly lower index of refraction than germanium, but it is still large enough to facilitate control of aberrations. In addition, the dispersion of silicon is relatively low. Silicon can be diamond turned.
